Clearly, we have before us a man diving. But why was this painted in a tomb, and what does it mean? Here too we have a choice of interpretations: either the painter wanted to represent a dive and nothing more, a real event, or else this dive has an allegorical meaning. … Which of the two hypotheses should we accept? The perfectly composed beauty of this slab, the wonder of the young adolescent body’s flight through space; a flight painted against the white of the background roughly two and a half thousand years ago and which seems as though it is about to end at any moment in the blue-green of the water, the haunting nature of a scene which comes to use as a complete novelty, transmitted to us over the centuries by Greek art.
